Call of Colorado

Colorado is one of the most beautiful states situated in
the Midwest. It has extreme weather, i.e. very cold in the
winters and very hot and arid in the summers. Despite this
it is very beautiful. It has a great reputation for winter
sports. It is ideal for skiing and snowboarding. In summers
too there are a lot of activities like hiking, camping,
rafting, caving and mountaineering. Climbers enjoy the
canyons and revel in the beauty of the diverse rock
formations. It is situated in the middle of seven other
states.

It is a beautiful place but the life for the inhabitants is
not beautiful. The climate is not kind to the people of
Colorado. It is not easy to live in a place where shoveling
the snow is a daily chore and the treacherous roads a real
torture. The people cannot bear the harsh winter so they
retire to the more friendly climes of Florida and Georgia.

Colorado might be a difficult place to live in but the
people take pride in their state. They try their best to
protect the beauty and purity of Colorado. They refused to
hold the Olympics in 1976, as they feared that there might
be harm to their state. They realized that there might be
contamination, population boom and a financial load on the
state.

The rich terra cotta color of the land and rocks is the
reason for the state being called Colorado meaning 'colored
red'. The state has a rich history and a cultural
tradition. Colorado is the confluence of many cultures like
Native Americans, Anglo Europeans and Hispanic Europeans.
The Spanish influence on the state could be gauged by the
names of the places like Pueblo, San Luis and the state's
own name which means 'to blush'.

Colorado is associated with many activities and myths. The
1800s saw a heavy rush of prospectors of gold. Many gold
and silver mining towns came up during this period. You can
also see a piece of history by visiting the ghost towns of
the early settlers. Living in Colorado in this period,
particularly in small towns, must have surely been very
tough indeed. The atmosphere must have surely been of wild
Wild West as seen in Hollywood movies.

There are calm places as well in Colorado. The Rocky
mountain range runs towards the west of the state, the
cattle country in the north-west and the capital city of
Denver is in the urban belt of the east of Colorado. The
city has a population of 500,000 and a metro population of
2.1 million. Though a relatively new city, it is known for
its restaurants and museums. The Colfax Avenue is the
longest street in America and the inventor of the
cheeseburger in 1935, Louis Bellast used to live here.

Colorado offers something to all types of visitors. It
offers everything from urban sophistry to the ruggedness of
the Wild West. Its vast stretch of land and clear skies
brings out the creativity of an individual.
