The Grandeur of The Rockies is Overwhelming

If you've never been to the Rockies, you don't know what
you're missing.
The only mountains I'd ever seen before were those mountains
that were on the east coast. It was her grandmothers
birthday that brought us to Colorado.
I'd spent time in the Smokies of Tennessee and marveled at
the height of the tallest peak - Clingmans Dome which was
around 6,000 feet.
No amount of preparation could have prepared me for the
awe-inspiring nature of the Rocky Mountains. From the moment
we first saw them I wanted to absorb everything about the
biggest mountains I'd ever seen...the height, the size, the
solitude...the grandeur.
We flew into Albequerque on Southwest Airlines and landed
just before lunch. We rented a Ford Explorer from Hertz and
took off toward the mountains we could see far off in the
distance.
Lori and I figured we would pass the mountains we could see
within a hour, maybe two hours. We couldn't wait to see the
"real" mountains.
We drove and drove and drove...for four hours and we still
had not reached the mountains we had seen at the airport!
I was amazed and the further we drove, the more awestruck
I became at the grandeur of the mountains.
It was December 1, 1992 and there was a little snow on the
ground. we had worn running suits for the drive from the
airport to grandma's house. We stored our heavy coats in
the back of the truck and figured we would get them out
when we arrived.
We pulled into the driveway and Grandma, Uncle John
and Aunt Laura met us before we were able to get our heavy
coats on.
We were outside for more than an hour talking when I
realized I was not cold. I asked what the temperature was
and believed the answer would be 45 degrees or so. Uncle
John showed me the thermometer and it read 15 degrees! I
couldn't believe it.
Apparently the low humidity had something to do with it.
John had something else he wanted to show us. It was dark
and the only light was on the porch. John went over and
turned off the switch. The dark enveloped us. I had never
experienced pitch black before. I could put my hand right
in front of my face and I still could not see it. I was
amazed until I looked up...
There were so many stars in the sky that we could not count
them all. In West Tennessee where we live, when we look at
the stars, there are areas of the sky don't look like there
are any stars. The skies in Colorado don't have any place
where there are not stars.
I knew that I wanted to move to Colorado someday. I had
to...I could not miss out on the beauty that is the Rocky
Mountains.
since that weekend in 1992, we've worked hard to get
enough money saved up to move to Colorado. When we get
there we don't want to work, just enjoy the mountains!
I'm not there yet, but I am Rockies Bound!
